I have had PC at home almost 20 years and only one time my HDD is broke up. That and one 10-yrs old motherboard has broke up while this time. Maybe I've been lucky or I believed my elementary school teacher when he said that "PC needs love and caring that she will work". Same time he stroked top of the monitor :D In that time I thought that he was insane, but later when I thought that again, he got good point there.
I lost almost 10 HDDs so far (from various manufacturers, no hard pattern there), 2 monitors, at least 1 motherboard and a boxload of modems (hey, I ran a BBS for some ~12 years)... On the server side the track record is actually worse, with at least two dozen dead SCSI disks and untold number of network cards. One note there, I'm counting "unreliable" as failed - a lot of hardware can limp along for quite some time if it's not pushed to the limit/overheated.
Just for curiosity Salmiakki, I would like to see your vision of 1000e desktop PC :)
Actually, I think you're pretty close to what I'd suggest as a good all-around machine, maybe with the caveat that you did not include a monitor. If fact, this is almost a refresh of my config as seen from http://www.himalia.fi/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5640#p5640 (assembled summer 2011, I've only added a Samsung 840 just now for my birthday). Ripjaws are there because they were on sale and actually cost the same as the kingstons. I went with an i3 there as in this box I wouldn't overclock anyway, if I had a classic box, I would have went with the 2500K (or it's Ivy bridge equivalent today), so technically, it's the same config.

ist that still actual? i' researching too.
that's what i found:

all the information is in german language, though. i think the core information there can be understood nevertheless.
they also organized a list of enthusiasts who would build up the PC from its single parts up.. just for fun .i'll drive there, have a little workshop and drive back with a new system.
