HLSW

Post by gaoesa »

Because of continuous DoS attack, I may need to increase the countermeasures.

This may result HLSW users getting banned because of bugs in the program. I recommend everyone to not use that program at least not extensively until they fix it.

Dam shame your still under ddos.
But what version of hlsw are you talking about?
I use an older version: HLSW v1.3.2.1

If all users on hlsw are getting banned, than i can't play on Himalia annymore.

It's not about HLSW users that automaticaly gets banned. The problem is that HLSW has buggy code that is hyperactively querying the server (several times per second). It shouldn't be so bad though that using only one HLSW program would result getting banned. However, if the player has several instances of it running, it may result the player getting banned to at least some extent.

Unfortunately, only the programmers of the HLSW can fix this bug. In any case, if it would happen that the server would automatically ban some player you can contact and ask your IP to be removed from the firewall.

Also, the firewall rules try to apply so that the players can still access the website if blocked.

I possibly need to point out that HLSW is not a reason for this DOS attack that players have noticed from time to time from very high pings, but only that the counter measures don't necessarily have the means to isolate the HLSW users from the attacking packets.

I will add that the servers have actually been under the attack for 2 weeks now and other measures had been made previously. However, the old methods have started failing and therefore some tightening must be made.

I'm sure if you have only one HLSW open it is safe and if not, I will remove the firewall rules that have excluded anyone out.

There is no longer risks for HLSW users to get firewall banned.

I also downloaded the HLSW and it seems it works ok. The 1.3.3.7b version.

However, it may still show some amount of erroneus results. This is because it keeps querying the server with a frequent interval and sometimes the server decides to start blocking the querys. The best results of knowing what is the status on the servers is to look from the main page.

Oh, I just realised, there is 2 servers with the same IP. If you keep monitoring both of them the query threshold may exceed.

This problem should be fixed now.
